OWASSO, OK -- The City of Owasso is taking donations to purchase a memorial bench in honor of Sgt. Andrew Looney, who was killed while serving in the United States Army.

Looney, 22, died June 21 at Lar Sholtan Village, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered after an insurgent detonated a suicide vest next to a traffic control point.

Looney joined the Army right after he graduated from Owasso High School, and he served in Iraq as well. He suffered a dramatic brain injury and lost half of his foot during a tour there in 2007. Still, he remained in the service and went to Afghanistan.

Four benches surround the granite pillars of the Owasso Veterans Memorial, honoring Owasso residents who have given the ultimate sacrifice while serving to protect our country's freedom.

Engraving on the bench will include Looney's name, tour of duty dates and location, separation date and branch of service.

During the City Council's regular meeting on Tuesday, July 20, the council announced the city is accepting donations. Donations will be collected until September 30 and can be made in person at City Hall, located at 111 N. Main Street or sent by mail to the attention of City Clerk, P.O. Box 180, Owasso, OK 74055.

The money collected will be designated for the purchase of Looney's memorial bench. Any excess funds will be used solely for improvements to the Veterans Memorial.
