TULSA, OK -- The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and the EPA say preliminary results from air quality monitoring indicate no toxins are in the smoke coming from a fire at a North Tulsa landfill.

In a news release Friday, the DEQ said those preliminary findings were taken by an EPA aircraft that was equipped to image, map, ID and quantify chemical vapors and plumes.

The DEQ has called a news conference for Friday afternoon at the landfill located on 56th Street North, east of U.S. Highway 75.

The release says additional air quality data is currently being recorded on ground-level monitors and that information is not yet available.

"DEQ appreciates the quick response of EPA in this matter," said DEQ Executive Director Steve Thompson. "DEQ and EPA will remain at the landfill throughout the day to place additional air quality monitors and gather data from those that have already been placed."

On Thursday, the DEQ ordered the landfill to be closed until further notice and officials will update the public beginning at 2 p.m. Friday.
