UNDATED -- The Oklahoma Transportation Commission approved an eight-year Construction Work Plan Tuesday that will allow for more than $4.3 billion in highway and bridge improvements across the state by the end of 2018.

"We believe people will be pleased with this 8-year plan, which addresses long-term problems in a comprehensive way," Transportation Secretary Gary Ridley said. "Past funding increases approved by the Legislature and governor helped us make significant steps toward being able to implement this comprehensive strategy. It has taken a tremendous amount of work by many people to get to this point."

The eight-year plan serves as an outline for bridge and highway construction.

ODOT said more than 1,700 projects statewide, including 650 bridge replacements, are included in the plan. That's more than three times the amount than its first eight-year plan implemented in 2003.

"Staying the course is the best way for Oklahomans to ensure their roads and bridges don't get short changed when it comes to a safe and efficient highway system," he said.

The plan also includes almost $2 billion in major improvements and safety median barriers to high traffic facilities, as well as shoulders on some rural two-lane highways.
