Dog Owner Pleads Guilty In Kay County Animal Cruelty Case

A 38-year-old Wichita, Kansas man accused of keeping over 100 pit bulls tied to chains and starving has been sentenced in a Kay County courtroom in Newkirk, Oklahoma.

NEWKIRK, OKLAHOMA -- A 38-year-old Wichita, Kansas man accused of keeping over 100 pit bulls tied to chains and starving has been sentenced in a Kay County courtroom in Newkirk, Oklahoma.

Jerry Southern pleaded guilty Monday, August 23, 2010 to five counts of cruelty to animals.

He was sentenced to 90 days in the Kay County jail beginning in October 2010 and ordered to pay $10,000 to three animal rights organizations.

He was originally charged in 2008 with 70 counts of felony animal cruelty.

In December 2008, Kay County officials found 106 dogs in Southern's care after receiving a tip.

Southern has been banned from owning pit bulls in the state of Kansas five years ago.
