Hermine Remnants Bring Heavy Rain, Tornado To Oklahoma

Much of Oklahoma remains under a tornado watch or flood watch Wednesday evening as remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine move across the state.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Much of Oklahoma remains under a flood watch Thursday as remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine continue move across the state.

The flood watch, issued for all but far northwestern Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Panhandle, remains in effect through the noon hour on Thursday.  It includes counties such as Tulsa, Cherokee, Craig, Creek, Delaware, Mayes, Okmulgee, Osage, Rogers, Washington, and Wagoner.

News On 6 Chief Meteorologist Travis Meyer said the best chance for heavy rain in the Tulsa area is Wednesday night into the early morning Thursday.  Meyer said one computer model indicates as much as eight inches of rain could fall in Okmulgee.

The storm moved into southern Oklahoma Wednesday afternoon, bringing strong winds, heavy rains and at least one tornado.

The National Weather Service said a tornado touched down briefly about six miles south of Marietta in far southern Oklahoma late Wednesday, causing no injuries or damage.

Tornadoes warnings also were issued for Choctaw, McCurtain and Pushmataha counties, but no tornadoes were confirmed with those storms.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said U.S. 69 near Colbert highway was closed for several huors after a possible tornado or a microburst, strong downward winds from a collapsing thunderstorm, moved through the area about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Michelann Ooten said power lines were knocked down near Colbert. Oklahoma Gas and Electric reported more than 2,000 outages, mostly in Colbert, at one point but that number had dwindled to fewer than 400 by Wednesday night.

Rainfall amounts included 1.98 inches in Hugo; 2.92 in Waurika and 3.57 in the Ardmore area.

The weather service warned of possible minor flooding along the North Canadian River from Oklahoma City to Harrah and along the Caney River near Ramona and Bird Creek from Avant to near Sperry.

Moderate flooding is possible along Polecat Creek near Sapulpa.
