TULSA, OKLAHOMA -- Oklahomans trained in bringing relief to those who need it most Saturday at Memorial Baptist Church in Tulsa. About 80 volunteers trained in providing all kinds of disaster assistance - from clearing trees to serving food.

The Fall Disaster Relief Training sponsored by the Tulsa Metro Baptist Association showed volunteers how to serve on food lines providing large quantities of food to disaster victims while maintaining sanitation and health code standards, according to disaster relief volunteer Allen Woodworth.

Other volunteers formed chainsaw and "mud-out" crews, learning to clear brush and limbs in the aftermath of a tornado and clear out homes that were flooded by heavy rains or hurricanes.

"We try to return peoples' lives to normal as quickly as possible," Woodworth said.

Volunteers with daycare ministries make sure the children of disaster victims "have a safe place to come while families get their lives in order," he said.

About 80 potential volunteers learned or renewed skills while another 20-25 volunteers in yellow shirts and hats provided the training.

Memorial Baptist Church is located at 2800 S. Yale. The Tulsa Metro Baptist Association provides disaster relief training in the spring and fall, Woodworth said.
