Driver Sleepiness Blamed For Sulphur Woman's Death

Katie Jean Stephenson died Sunday morning in a wreck on U.S. Highway 177 about a mile south of Sulphur in Murray County.

SULPHUR, Oklahoma -- A 30-year-old Sulphur woman was killed in a one-car accident troopers blamed on driver sleepiness. Katie Jean Stephenson died at the scene of the wreck on U.S. Highway 177 about a mile south of Sulphur in Murray County.

At 6:11 a.m., Stephenson was driving a 1999 Toyota pickup that left the roadway to the left, rolled about a quarter time and struck a tree with its top, according to a report by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. She was pinned in the truck for about an hour before being freed by the Sulphur Fire Department.

Troopers say Stephenson was wearing a seatbelt. The cause of the collision is listed as sleepiness.

The driver's condition at the time of the accident is listed as unknown.
