TULSA, Oklahoma --  Traffic was blocked for more than four hours on the Broken Arrow Expressway at Harvard as emergency workers cleared the scene of an injury accident.

Police say a semi tractor trailer hit a female pedestrian at 3300 E. Broken Arrow Expressway at 11:10 a.m.

Police now say it was an attempted suicide.

"According to witnesses, a female pedestrian was standing by the side of the road in what was actually described at one point as being in a sprinting stance," said Tulsa Police Captain Richard Alexander.

"As the semi was approaching, she sprinted into the road in front of the semi."

The truck was in the middle lane, and the driver swerved into the left lane to avoid the woman. The truck hit another vehicle, which then crashed into a retention wall.

"He did the best effort he could in order to prevent striking the pedestrian," Alexander said. "I don't believe enough distance was given to him to do that."

EMSA transported the woman in critical condition to a Tulsa hospital. Police have not released her identity, but EMSA reports she is between 20 and 30-years-old.

Neither driver was injured in the wreck, Alexander said.

Both lanes of the highway were reopened at 3:30 p.m.
