OKLAHOMA CITY -- A woman who has dedicated her life to helping others in need in Uganda was honored in Oklahoma Tuesday.

Governor Brad Henry honored Sister Rosemary Tuesday for her work with Ugandan children by declaring it Sister Rosemary Day. This was Sister Rosemary's first trip to Oklahoma and the first time for her to meet many of the people who are supporting her work half a world away.

NEWS 9 first met Sister Rosemary six months ago playing football with Adrian Peterson. Peterson and dozens of others including football pros and doctors, traveled to Africa with an organization called Pros For Africa to support Sister Rosemary and help make life a little easier for Ugandans.

Sister Rosemary was the guest of honor at a Pros For Africa fundraiser Tuesday, and her smile and mission was on the hearts of everyone in the room.

"I thank you very much for this great honor. I don't deserve it," Sister Rosemary said.

The growing support brought tears to a woman who stands up to murderers. Sister Rosemary started a tailoring school to protect women and children from the LRA, the terrorists who have tortured and killed thousands of Ugandans. Now because of the Oklahoma founded, Pros For Africa, she can bring more children into her safe haven.

"In a way it helps us in like a springboard, saying you can do more. You can touch more lives, you can go ahead," Sister Rosemary said. "I can take care of their health. I can restore their dignity. I can give them more skills to make them become self-reliant."

Pros For Africa is planning another trip to visit Sister Rosemary in 2011, and organizers said it will be bigger than the first. Volunteers will provide more medicine, build more drinking wells and continue to bring hope to Uganda.

"We just got to do something to help them, and that's what we're trying to do," said Reggie Whitten, Pros For Africa Founder.

Whitten said they are in need of volunteer dentists and nurses to go with them on the next Pros For Africa trip in March. Whitten said since this trip earlier this year, about two dozen professional football players have pledged their support and want to be part of the next trip to Uganda.
