OKLAHOMA CITY -- A woman crossing an Oklahoma City street while on her wheelchair was hit and killed by an oncoming vehicle Friday morning.

Police said officers were called to N.E. 23rd Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard at about 7 a.m. where they learned the woman, who was approximately 60-years-old, had been crossing the street just south of the scene when she was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound.

Police said a woman was driving her daughter to school and suddenly saw the woman in the wheelchair.

"She looked up, saw a wheelchair in her lane, tried to swerve, tried to stop and wasn't successful at either one and hit the wheelchair," Oklahoma City Police Lt. Jim Miller said.

The woman was transported by EMSA to the OU Medical Center in critical condition but was later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the involved vehicle did not receive any citations.

No names have been released.
