DEL CITY, Oklahoma -- A 10-year-old boy saved the life of a schoolmate during recess at Epperly Heights Elementary School.

It started out as an ordinary Thursday at school 4th-grader Deaion Webb, but at the end of the day he was called a hero.

Webb rescued 9-year-old Jessica Maddera after she was apparently strangled and stuck on a tether ball string.  Jessica said she'd just finished hooking the ball to the pole when the rope wrapped around her neck.

"I slid down and somehow it got twisted around the string and I started choking," said Maddera.

"I turned around and her face was, like, real red," said Webb.

Webb rushed to her aid, picked her up and unwrapped the tether ball rope from around her neck. He then laid her down and ran to get help from a teacher.

Maddera's parents said they are so grateful to Webb for rescuing their daughter.

"I'm so proud that a fourth grader had the forethought to really think ahead and save her life," said Jessica's mother Aimee Maddera.

To show their appreciation, the Madderas gave Web an X-Box 360 and two video games.

Webb's mother said she couldn't be more proud of her little boy.

"I'm so very proud of him," said Deaion Webb's mother, Jennie White. "I'm so glad she is OK and my son was right there and did the right thing. I love my little hero."

Maddera's parents said the little girl has rope burns around her neck but she's okay.

The school planned to honor Webb during a pride assembly later this month, and the mayor of Del City will also recognize his heroic act during the next city council meeting October 18.
