Couple Arrested for Abuse of 1-Year-Old While Mother Away in Afghanistan

OKLAHOMA CITY – An Oklahoma City couple has been arrested for child abuse after a 1-year-old boy in their care was hospitalized with multiple injuries.

According to police, Gabriel and Elsa Solis were arrested Thursday, October 7 after EMSA responded to a sick call concerning an infant boy. A physician at Children's Hospital informed police late Thursday night that she suspected child abuse.

The child was brought to the hospital with bleeding in the brain, a broken shoulder and a punctured lung among other injuries.

The couple claimed that they had legal custody of the child while the boy's mother is deployed to Afghanistan.

Gabriel Solis served in the air force with the boy's mother at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. When the mother was deployed, the couple took over care of him. The couple was then transferred to Tinker Air Force Base in June. It is unclear how long the boy has been in the couple's care.

The couple also has two children of their own who were taken into protective custody.
