Husband Of Murdered Tulsa Woman Arrested For Violation Of Protective Order

TULSA, Oklahoma - The husband of a murdered Tulsa woman was arrested Thursday, not for her murder, but for violation of a protective order.

Damesha Hunter, 32, was found shot to death Thursday morning. 

Tulsa Police got a call from her husband, Laroye Hunter, about 10 a.m.  He said he was at work talking to Damesha on the phone when she said someone was at the door, so she put the phone down to see, but she never came back.

He says he went to check on her and found her shot to death.

"There were no signs of forced entry, no signs of a ransacking or burglar so we're still trying to figure out what the motive may be, who the suspect may be," Sergeant Mike Huff, Tulsa Police, said.

Damesha Hunter has four children, ages 16, 10, 6 and 4.  Her Facebook  page says she went to school at Central High School. Her oldest child is a student there now.  Police say it was devastating to tell him his mother had been murdered.

"The child I personally met was an outstanding young man that has had his world destroyed," said Tulsa Police Sergeant Mike Huff. "I will never forget telling him what happened."

Police say Laroye and Damesha have a history of domestic violence.

In 2006, when she was eight and a half months pregnant, she went to confront Hunter and his new girlfriend. She told police he pushed her to the ground, hit her in the mouth with his shoe and tried to strangle her.

He was charged with assault and battery, but it was dismissed when she didn't show up to testify.

The couple got a marriage license in January of this year and on March 18th, a court determined Hunter was not the father of her youngest child.

That same day, she filed a protective order against him that is still in effect. That time, she said he pushed her to the floor and tried to choke her.

And as recent as last Saturday, police say she called 911, saying he was hitting her as they drove home together. Officers couldn't find him that night, but were investigating.

Police say Damesha's family and friends are devastated.

"Everyone had great words to say about her," Sergeant Huff said. "Obviously, her family cared about her very much. Really good people in her family and they are being very helpful in the investigation."

News On 6 crime reporter Lori Fullbright also found older court records, where two other women had also filed protective orders against Laroye Hunter in 2002 and 2003, accusing him of hitting an choking them.

Hunter's family said these documents don't portray him accurately. They said he is devastated over Damesha's death. They said he was thrilled when they got married, was getting his life back on track and had never been happier.
