Applications Now Being Accepted For Tulsa Police Chief And Firefighter Jobs

TULSA, Oklahoma -- The City of Tulsa is giving more people the chance to become the next chief of police.

Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett says the city is opening the position to the public Monday and it'll be posted for one week.

Bartlett says two internal applicants were interviewed last week, by a panel including Bartlett's director of economic development, the Tulsa Crime Commission and the city of Tulsa's personnel director.

Bartlett says the same panel will interview external candidates.

The Tulsa Police Chief's job is currently filled by Interim Police Chief Chuck Jordan.

There is also another big opportunity for job seekers Monday at the Tulsa Fire Department. The fire department is hoping to fill 48 jobs lost due to budget cuts.

Around 250 people lined up late last week for a chance to turn in their applications.

Those 48 positions are supposed to be funded with federal grant money, but the catch is the Tulsa Fire Department is waiting to see if it will get that money. There's no guarantee the grant will come. If that money does come through a spokesperson with TFD says it will allow the fire department to return to its full strength.

Although the department is down by 48 firefighters, this doesn't affect response time, the only difference is how many people show up to the scene during an emergency.

Deputy Fire Chief Ray Driskell says the fire department is looking ahead for next year while it waits on federal grant money.

"And if we do not get the grant we're still making provisions to start a class, not that size, but start a class sometime in the next fiscal period which would be after July 1," said Deputy Fire Chief Ray Driskell.

Those who are selected will have to go through a series of interviews, endurance tests and background checks.

The Tulsa Fire Department will be accepting those applications from Noon to 5 p.m. at the department's safety training center at 10926 East Cameron.

Applicants must apply in person and bring $25 in cash or a money order, a photo ID, proof of high school graduation or GED. You should also bring your high school and college transcripts.
