Tulsa Transit Receives Federal Grant To Help Build CNG Station

TULSA, Oklahoma – Tulsa Transit has received a $2.5 million federal Clean Fuels grant to help build a compressed natural gas fueling station, the Tulsa Transit Authority said Friday.

"We had been working very hard to secure a funding source for our CNG fueling station, so we were very excited to learn that we are the recipients of this substantial Clean Fuels grant award," said General Manager Bill Cartwright said. "I think this award demonstrates the federal government's commitment to public transit, and to the environment."

The station, to be built at Tulsa Transit's bus facility, will not be available for public use. It's expected to begin in February 2011 and be completed in the summer 2011.

Tulsa Transit is in the process of converting its fleet from diesel power to CNG. The new buses will help the department save on fuel costs.

The buses will also be quieter and won't produce any diesel fumes.
