ROGERS COUNTY, Oklahoma -- A Claremore teen was killed by a wrong-way driver at about 10:17 p.m. Friday. Hunter Lee O'Dell, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene of the two-car accident on State Highway 66 near Foyil.
Troopers say 45-year-old Jesus Gonzazlez of Tulsa was southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway for about four miles, and witnesses tried to flash their lights "to get his attention," according to Trooper Andrew Floyd of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The Claremore teen was driving a 1998 Nissan Altima northbound in a northbound lane on Highway 66 near East-West 430 when his car was struck head on by Gonzalez's 1995 Chevy pickup.
O'Dell was pinned for about 45 minutes before Foyil Firefighters freed him using the jaws of life. He died of head, arm, leg and internal injuries.
"There was no improper action by the driver that was hit," Floyd said.
Gonzazlez, who troopers say smelled of alcohol, was taken by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital in critical condition with head and internal injuries.
Both men were wearing their seatbelts.
