STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- A woman who lives in the Stillwater area claims God's mercy and grace are the only reason her family home and farm were spared from a wildfire last Wednesday.

The fire came dangerously close on three sides of her property, but managed to spare her house, the barn, hay bales and all of her livestock and farm equipment.

"All we lost are a few fence posts," said Barbara Herring. "I thought when we were told to leave, it would all be gone. Anyone who does not believe in God needs to come here and see this."

Herring said she started praying as soon as the fire started encroaching on her farm. She said when the wind shifted and flames started threatening a nearby neighborhood, she started praying for the homeowners there, too.

Herring said she and her 99-year-old father did evacuate their family farm after firefighters told her to do so.

"The fireman started hollering get out of here and I knew I had to because it was coming straight at our place," said Herring.

Herring then called her pastor who started a prayer chain. Herring said she believes that is the main reason why all the homes in the fire's path were spared.

She shared her story about the power of prayer this past Sunday at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Perkins. She wanted to thank all those in the congregation who helped out with that prayer chain started by the pastor.

When asked if she felt lucky, she said, "Luck had nothing to do with it. God did."
