MUSKOGEE, Oklahoma -- A Green Country community is reeling after the brutal murder of a 4-year-old boy. Police say a teenager broke into a Muskogee home and stabbed Dakota Lane 36 times.

His grandfather says Dakota loved the outdoors. And he says it still hasn't sunk in that he will never get to take little Dakota fishing again.

"It's unbelievable. It really is. Just cannot believe it still," Jack Bumgartner said. "We're gonna miss him greatly."

Police say Aaron Laconsello, 18, broke into the Lane's home Tuesday night and attacked Dakota and his mother, Stephanie, with a pair of scissors.

Stephanie Lane, who's eight months pregnant, was treated and released. But Dakota suffered 36 stab wounds and died at a Tulsa hospital.

"It's mind boggling it really is. You know there's no way a 4-year-old little boy could defend himself like that," Bumgartner said.

Laconsello is now facing murder, burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon charges. Police say he's from Tahlequah, but he's been staying in a house just a couple of doors down from the Lanes for the last few weeks.

Investigators say the Lanes didn't know the teenager, and they have no motive for the crime.

"In a criminal action, you usually have some answers. It may not be something that someone likes, but you usually have some answers. This is why this happened. We don't have any answers to that," said Larry Moore, Muskogee County District Attorney.

Penny Cowles says Boomerang Diner wants to lend its support to the family.

"Everyone is just kinda in shock," said Penny Cowles, Boomerang Diner Regional Manager.

They plan to donate a portion of their sales next Tuesday to the Lane family. People are already dropping off teddy bears and flowers in Dakota's memory. But they can't forget someone is responsible for ending his young life.

"The death penalty," said Deanna Gilbert, a neighbor. "I don't think he should be able to breathe again, at all."

"That was a child. Death penalty that's what I think should happen," Myrna Payne, another neighbor, said.

Aaron Laconsello was arrested twice last June for trespassing and public intoxication in Cherokee County and he was banned from the NSU campus.

He will be charged in Muskogee on Friday.
