TULSA, Oklahoma -- The Blue Star Mothers are kicking off a new effort to send boxes to soldiers by Christmas.

It's just a few weeks to Christmas, and the Blue Star Mothers want to make sure that our troops overseas are not forgotten.

"This is our official kickoff for Christmas boxes to be sent over, so every year we ask people to come out and support the troops," said Blue Star Mother Trisha Baker.

Baker has a son in the Army at Fort Bragg. She's helping gather everyday things to send to troops serving overseas.

"So we need candy we can put in the boxes. Hand held games are nice. Batteries to run the games and then the regulars, deodorant, trial size shampoo," Baker said.

The Blue Star Mothers are unwavering in their support for the troops, but they see public interest come and go.

"Its our men and women over there, whether they're fighting the war, or standing up for peace or helping in another country, we need to support them," said Blue Star Mother Sheila Mouse Jones.

The Blue Star Mothers pack the supplies they gather into boxes sent overseas. It takes about 10 days for the packages to arrive.

The cash they collect goes to pay the postage. Last year, 1600 men and women got one of the boxes just from this chapter of Blue Star Mothers.

"It just means a lot to get something from home that is more familiar than what is surrounding you at the time," said Jones.

Fox Cleaners is a drop off point for Blue Star Mothers every day, but you can also contribute to them through their website.
