Feed Mill Explosion In Ottawa County Injures Three

Simmons Feed Mill said a flash fire ignited while contractors were using a cutting torch in the mill.  The company said three employees of the contractor were transported to a Tulsa hospital to be treated for burns.

FAIRLAND, Oklahoma -- At least three medical helicopters were dispatched to the community of Fairland in Ottawa County Wednesday afternoon after an flash fire damaged a feed mill on the west side of the community.

The town is located in north of Grand Lake at the intersection of U.S. Highway 60 and state highway 125.

Simmons Feed Mill said the fire ignited about 2 p.m. while contractors were using a cutting torch in the mill.  The company said three employees of the contractor were transported to a Tulsa hospital to be treated for burns.  Their names have not been released, but the Fairland Police Chief said the men were badly burned.

The three men worked for a company out of Jay, Oklahoma, called Mid-America Repair Services. That company is required to contact the Occupational Safety Health Administration, or OSHA.

No Simmons Feed Mill employees were injured.  They said the mill was up and running within an hour of the incident.

Several nearby businesses tell the News On 6 they heard an explosion and saw emergency crews rushing to the scene.
