HULBERT, Oklahoma -- A Cherokee Count volunteer fire department based in Hulbert has received a $10,000 grant from Georgia-Pacific.

The Spring Valley Volunteer Fire Department was one of 25 fire department in 23 states, including Oklahoma which won a 2010 Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade grant.

The department received $10,000 in October.

According to Georgia-Pacific, their Bucket Brigade grants have contributed more than $600,000 to rural and small town fire units in communities with Georgia-Pacific facilities.

The program supports firefighters with cash donations for programming and purchasing necessary equipment, and with materials for fire safety education in local schools.

The release says this year's grants will total $175,000, the largest amount awarded in the program's history.
