MCINTOSH COUNTY, Oklahoma -- A 10-year-old Muskogee boy was hospitalized in critical condition after wrecking a four-wheeler while trying to avoid an object in the roadway, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Landon Gauger was driving a 2010 Articat four-wheeler on a gravel road just outside Checotah at about 4:20 Saturday afternoon when he swerved to the right to avoid a bucket. The Articat struck an embankment and overturned one time.

Gauger was thrown about 31 feet from the wreck. He was taken by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital in critical condition with head and internal injuries. A passenger, 10-year-old Cole Carpenter of Muskogee was treated and released with minor injuries at a Eufaula hospital.

Trooper Justin Williams said the driver's condition was apparently normal at the time of the accident. The cause of the accident is listed as a young, inexperienced driver.
