TULSA, Oklahoma -- A fire that started on the balcony of an upstairs apartment damaged several units and forced several families out of their homes Sunday.

Tulsa Fire crews responded to the Avondale Apartments complex at 68th and Trenton around 3 p.m.

When crews arrived they found the flames had spread from the balcony to another unit on the same level.

While firefighters were containing the blaze they learned a unit just above them had guns and ammunition.

"There was a report that one of the upstairs units had a lot of ammunition and firearms in them which obviously can lead to a dangerous situation," said Tulsa Fire Chief Bill French. "The good thing about that is the fire never extended to the unit that the firearms and ammunition were in."

The unit where the fire started and an adjacent apartment sustained extensive damage. Two lower level units received major smoke and water damage.

Investigators are looking for the occupants of the apartment where the fire started so they can make a determination what might have happened before the fire started.
