HENRYETTA, Oklahoma -- The Okmulgee County community of Henryetta came together Sunday to mourn the loss of one of their own.
Landon Jewell, 13, died after being shot Friday night. The circumstances surrounding Landon's death remain unclear.
Regardless, his friends and teachers are focused on remembering a 13-year-old they say will be sorely missed
"Two days ago we were laughing and having fun," Landon's football coach said during the vigil. "Then I went home, and an hour later he was gone."
Landon Jewell's second family, his football team and coach, spoke about the young friend they suddenly lost Friday night.
Football was his passion. His jerseys were on display at the memorial. He was also passionate about animals, and putting a smile on people's faces.
"He was the one who would calm everyone down. He would come up with the funniest jokes out of nowhere," his coach said.
Landon's sudden death has rattled the tight-knit Henryetta community. For some, it's still tough to put their grief into words. Instead, they are using the words of others.
"Time heals all wounds, so surrender to the sand. It seems heaven has gained an angel, but earth has lost a young man," said one of Landon's friends.
Those who spoke say Landon touched so many lives in such a short time, and that is what they will carry with them during this trying ordeal.
"Landon was a child that no matter where he was, he made you laugh, made you smile. And he made you feel like part of him," said a friend.
The funeral will be held on Thursday. Grief counselors will be on hand this week for Henryetta students who are struggling with this loss.
