BROKEN ARROW, Oklahoma -- City officials credit electronic tickets for playing a role in the drop in Broken Arrow traffic collisions and deaths in 2010. There was a 9 percent drop in overall wrecks from the year before, according to Sergeant Ed Ferguson of the Broken Arrow Police Department's traffic unit.

"Although the City of Broken Arrow normally averages five fatal collisions per year, the year 2010 had only one traffic death," Ferguson said in a news release.

The number of citations issued by officers using electronic citations has increased by 48.5 percent from January 15, 2010, to January 15, 2011 – from 7,389 in 2009-10 to 10,980 in 2010-11.

"Although there are many factors in the reduction of collisions in Broken Arrow last year, officials recognize the integration of an electronic citation program was one reason for the crash reductions," Ferguson said.

The BAPD also issued a word of thanks to drivers in the city for their role in reducing collisions.
