Grain Elevator Catches Fire In Garfield County

ENID, Oklahoma – A grain elevator has caught fire in Garfield County.

According to North Enid Police Chief Marty Schubert, the lower level of one grain elevator at Johnston Grain did catch fire near 30th Street and Willow.

According to Fire Marshall Ken Helms, several crews are on the scene, trying to access all areas of fire. The equipment there is on fire; specifically the conveyer belt that operates the elevator itself is on fire. The grain itself in not on fire and neither is the structure itself.

Helms said Thursday welding and other maintenance work was being done on the equipment itself. Welders followed all safety procedures, but a fire started overnight.

Schubert also said that a couple dozen people work at the facility.

Johnston Grain is the oldest, biggest privately owned grain elevator facility in Oklahoma.

It is unclear what sparked the blaze. No initial injuries were reported.
