BLANCHARD, Oklahoma -- Firefighters are trying to put out a grass fire that flared up Monday afternoon in Grady County.
Crews were called out to an area near State Highway 4 and the H.E. Bailey Turnpike around 1 p.m. The Grady County Commissioners just enacted a one week, county-wide burn ban Monday morning that could be extended.
Many believed the recent snowstorms had lessened the fire danger, but fire officials warned weeks ago the snow would do little to improve Oklahoma's dry conditions.
"All the snow will do for us is make the ground muddy. We'll still have fires as soon as the snow melts and we'll get stuck in the muddy ground and the dry grass will continue to burn," Guthrie Fire Chief Lester Branch said.
