TULSA, Oklahoma -- Animals and zookeepers get most of the attention at a zoo, but the flowers, trees, and veggies are also important.

The Tulsa Zoo's lead horticulturist says plants are crucial to the park's operation. Jay Ross oversees all the vegetation in the different enclosures and even a vegetable garden that grows food for the animals.

"We're growing plant material to actually supplement what we feed out through our commissary to help bring down costs, I guess you'd say a little bit, and as well it's sustainable. It's homegrown. We know what's been done to it," he said.

Ross says he also tries to make the landscaping interesting and comfortable for the zoo's visitors.

Plants from all over the world decorate the buildings and walkways. Ross says his goal is to make the park a destination for not only animal lovers but plant enthusiasts as well.
