DEL CITY, Oklahoma -- Firefighters from four different departments spent the night battling flames and monitoring hot spots at a vacant apartment complex in Del City.

Around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, a massive fire broke out at the Eagle Point Apartments at Interstate 40 and Scott Street. When fire units arrived, they found a fully-involved fire burning a townhouse building and threatening a gas station just 50 yards away.

Fire crews from Del City, Midwest City, Oklahoma City and Tinker Air Force Base employed a defensive attack on the apartment building. Because the apartments were vacant and no lives were at risk, firefighters stayed out of the building and fought the flames from outside.

Powerful winds threatened to spread the flames, so firefighters had to be constantly vigilant. It took several hours to put out the fire, but crews remained on the scene Monday morning monitoring hot spots.

The apartment complex has been vacant for more than two years. Fire investigators don't know yet caused the fire, but it does appear suspicious.
