OKLAHOMA CITY -- OG&E issued a warning to its electric customers Tuesday to be on the lookout for criminals pretending to work for the company.

People claiming to be OG&E employees have been involved in two types of scams.

In the first type, someone pretending to be an OG&E worker will knock on a customer's door and claim everyone in the house needs to come into the backyard to see something, such as overhead electric lines about to be moved underground.

Once everyone is outside, an accomplice will enter the home through the front door, steal valuables, and sneak back out.

In the second scam, a fake OG&E worker will go to a house and claim customers must immediately pay a past-due bill if they don't want their electric service disconnected.

OG&E said it will never send a worker to someone's home to ask for money.

There are simple steps customers can take to avoid being defrauded. All OG&E employees and authorized contractors carry a photo identification badge at all times. The company said if someone says they work for OG&E, customers should insist on seeing their identification.

Customers can also call OG&E to verify a worker's identity.
