One Person Treated After Chemical Spill At Tulsa Business

TULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa HAZMAT crews responded to a chemical spill at Ziegler near 12th and Frankfort Friday.

Tulsa Fire Captain Jerry Benefield said workers were conducting a plating operation when a hose containing sulphuric acid ruptured.  Benefield said the acid then mixed with silver cyanide, creating a toxic vapor.

"When those two chemicals mix it creates a very deadly vapor," Benefield said.

Benefield said the vapor not is not only harmful to the respiratory system, but also absorbs through the skin.

About 50 workers at the company were evacuated, Benefield said.  EMSA treated and release one person who inhaled the vapor.

Benefield said the vapor was contained to the inside of the building.

Hazmat crews were called in to decontaminate the scene.
