NORMAN, Oklahoma – The Maxwell Football Club announced Wednesday that OU defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been named one of 16 semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award.
The Bednarik Award is given annually to the nation’s best defensive player, and this is the second consecutive season that McCoy has been a semifinalist.
McCoy is one of three Big 12 semifinalists, joining Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and Texas A&M defensive lineman Von Miller.
McCoy is 15th nationally with 12 tackles for loss and he leads the Sooners with eight quarterback hurries. McCoy has made 63 percent of his stops behind the line of scrimmage, despite facing almost constant double teams.
The attention McCoy attracts has also helped allow defensive end Jeremy Beal to register a team-high 8.5 sacks.
The Bednarik Award list will be reduced to three finalists on Nov. 23, and a winner will be selected on Dec. 10. Only one OU player – linebacker Teddy Lehman in 2003 – has ever won the Bednarik Award. The last non-linebacker to win the award was North Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers in 2001.
