FORT MYERS, Florida -- The Tulsa women’s basketball team received a late scare from Akron in the FGCU Thanksgiving Classic, but held on for a 70-64 victory over the Zips.
TU saw a 14-point lead dwindle to two with under a minute remaining. But Taleya Mayberry converted both free throws of a one-and-one with 26 seconds remaining, and junior guard Tatum Beer converted on both of her free throws in a one-and-one situation to ice the game for the Golden Hurricane (3-1).
Mayberry recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists, while Beer pitched in 13 points.
The Golden Hurricane were dominated under the boards and outrebounded 48-31. The TU defense made up for it by holding Akron (2-4) to 31 percent shooting.
The Golden Hurricane returns to the the court on Tuesday when they travel to Central Arkansas for a 7 p.m. matchup.
