EL PASO, Texas -- Heading into a bowl game, a player like Toby Gerhart doesn’t exactly go unnoticed.
His 26 rushing touchdowns – best in all of college football – jump off the page, as do his 1,736 rushing yards. The Heisman Trophy finalist has been the catalyst for the Cardinal offense all season. That fact is not lost on University of Oklahoma coach.
“I got great respect for him. He’s a lot like what we are as a team,” said Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables, noting his toughness. “Their team really feeds off him. He’s a great leader. Our guys are extremely excited for the challenge.”
Stopping Gerhart will likely mean limiting mistakes. Stanford scored 40-plus points five times during the season, defeating teams like No. 8 Oregon and No. 9 USC.
“Injuries have slightened our margin of error,” said offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. “We’re playing a Stanford team that plays great ‘margin of error’ football. They don’t make mistakes.”
The two teams meet in the Sun Bowl on December 31 at 1:00 p.m.
