There was just as much action on the basketball court for the Sooners as there was off it for the football team Saturday. The University of Oklahoma hosted an in-state Junior Day for the top 15 prospects across the state.

Duncan’s Dominique Petties found out Saturday that OU became the second school [Texas Tech was the first] to offer the Demons’ star a scholarship. However, Petties should have received his offer earlier.

“I got one coming through the mail,” Petties said. “They [the OU coachers] asked me, ‘did I get something in the mail from them’. I said yeah because I thought they were talking about the letters for Junior Day. They asked me if I got the offer but I didn’t know what they were talking about.”

Petties said the coaches told him the offer should arrive within a couple of days. The Demons’ athlete stopped short of saying he was committing to the Sooners during the interview, but chances that he will wind up in Norman seem better than average.

“I loved OU,” Petties said. “I dreamed of going there when I was little.”

Petties is listed as an athlete but said the Sooners are recruiting him as a safety. One thing that caught his eye was the atmosphere on Junior Day.

“I loved it, it was a new experience,” Petties said. “How they treated us [stood out]. The facilities and everything really stood out.”

Nowata’s Austin Beck echoed the sentiments of Petties. Even though Beck did not receive an offer from OU, it did not dampen his experience.

“It went really well, I really enjoyed it,” Beck said. “I got to talk to [offensive line] coach [James] Patton. I got to look at the campus and see all the facilities. I really liked it.”

The 6-foot-8 285-pounder plays offensive and defensive line for the Ironmen. Beck said the Sooners are recruiting him for offensive tackle, while Oklahoma State and Kansas State have talked to him about playing both positions.

Beck could become just the second player in Nowata history to play Division I football and he said he is not sure how to take all the attention he has been receiving.

“It’s kind of nice and it’s kind of weird at the same time,” Beck said. “People I don’t even know talk to me about going to college.”

Beck said he has visits scheduled for OSU on Jan 30. and Tulsa Feb. 13.

Guthrie's Kentrell Brothers concurred with his fellow visitors assessment on Junior Day.

"I'd give it four stars [out of five]," Brothers said. "We got to see the facilites, it was really cool."

Brothers said he will visit Missouri Jan. 23 and plans on taking trips to Oklahoma State and Tulsa.

Lawton quarterback Cody Miller was scheduled to participate in Junior Day, but Wolervines coach Randy Breeze said Miller had something come up at the last minute at his church.
