The last thing some hockey players need is to participate in No-Shave November.

After all, many of them are already intimidating enough with burly frames and often sporting missing teeth or broken noses.

But for Oklahoma City Barons center Colin McDonald, the scraggly facial hair is more than worth it to make a difference.

McDonald started a team initiative to participate in a moustache version of the classic No-Shave November, but this time with a cause.

He is helping to raise awareness and money for prostate cancer, and said the team’s participation is a fun way to help out with the movement.

“Now that we are getting late into November, guys are getting pretty creative and we're putting our looks aside for the month,” McDonald said. “Don't get me wrong, I think guys are looking forward to shaving it all off but again, it goes to a great cause."

Prostate cancer is the No. 1 cancer in men, affecting one in every six males, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

McDonald said he was introduced to “Movember” by a teammate last year.

Movember, a combination of the “Mo” slang for moustache and the month of November, “challenges men to change both their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache,” according to its website.

As November approached, McDonald asked his coaches and teammates about participating and everyone was willing to take part.

“Now we are trying to get some of the fans and community involved,” McDonald said. “We have some of our family and friends that are donating now.
“We're just trying to get the word out there and get them informed on what the charity is all about, and hopefully they will start helping us out."

Professional athletes get involved with causes in many different ways, but the mustache movement is a fun spin on raising awareness for the players and community.

So the Barons are putting their looks aside for the month of November, even if it means looking a little uncanny.

“My definition of a good mustache is the guy who looks the creepiest,” McDonald said. “I don' think anyone really looks good. I think it's all kind of a creepy look, but again, that's what it's all about it's about raising awareness and I guess the mustache will do that.”
