OKLAHOMA CITY -- With both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State ready to kick off conference play Saturday, both coaches took time Thursday to speak to the media on the weekly Big 12 teleconference.

For the Cowboys, despite winning 12 of their 14 non-conference games, the Cowboys have played only one team with the level of talent they’ll face in the Big 12.

“We’re glad we’re 12-2, but of all of those 14 games we’re going to have to play better than any of those to compete in the Big 12,” Oklahoma State head coach Travis Ford said. “We’ve got a pretty good feel for who we are and our team understands that we’re going to have to play a lot better to compete in the league.”

With the Sooners’ success – especially in regards to their young players – will give the players something to build from to start conference play.

“[Winning] maybe gets your guys to have more confidence and gets them to believe in what you’re trying to teach,” Sooners’ head coach Jeff Capel said. Hopefully because of that challenging non-conference schedule that we’ve had, hopefully it’s something that we can carry over and will help us be better as we enter conference play.”

OU will kick off its Big 12 season at 3 p.m. Saturday with a home matchup with the No. 16 Texas A&M Aggies, while the Cowboys start conference play at 12 p.m. Saturday at home against No. 17 Kansas State.
