NORMAN, Okla. – Much of the fanfare surrounding National Signing Day took a hit thanks to snowy conditions and power outages, but the Oklahoma Sooners still signed a total of 17 players to letters of intent Wednesday.

The Sooners’ class of 17 is relatively small – compared to classes of at least 20 in each of the last six years – but it is still stacked with young talent. According to Rivals.com, all 17 are at least three-star recruits, and receiver Trey Metoyer and running back Brandon Williams are both five-star recruits.

“We were and still are a young team, but our philosophy has been to play the guys who are ready to play,” head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. “We’re seeing more and more who are coming to us with the maturity to be on the field. If they can help us, they’ll have that opportunity.”

The class includes players from nine different positions and five states. One of the Sooners’ biggest weaknesses last season was defensive tackle, which they addressed by signing three newcomers, all of which are ranked in the national Top 15 at the position.

“We like the depth and versatility of this class,” Stoops said. “It’s a talented, athletic group that will contribute in a lot of different positions.”

Three of OU’s new signees – defensive tackle Marquis Anderson, quarterback Kendal Thompson and running back Brandon Williams – enrolled early and already have been attending classes.
