WACO, Texas – Talk about starting the season off on a high note.

Oral Roberts pulled off a 7-3 upset win on the road against No. 16 Baylor on Friday afternoon to open up the new season.

Preseason All-Big 12 pitcher Logan Verrett took the mound for Baylor but had his debut spoiled as the Golden Eagles took advantage of him early.

ORU started the scoring off in the third inning, with sophomore catcher Bennett Pickar doubling and center fielder Joey Winiecki reaching first on a walk. Designated hitter Brandon King brought them both home with a double down the right side to give ORU a 2-0 lead.

Right fielder Nick Baligod brought King home and eventually scored on a double from Jared Schlehuber to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead and take Baylor’s All-Big 12 pitcher off the mound.

Baylor was able to manage one unearned run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 4-1. But the Bears’ mistakes kept them straggling as ORU took advantage again in the sixth.

Winiecki drove in another run to make it 5-1, and a wild pitch and an error led to two more runs for the Golden Eagles to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

Bryce Smolen got the win for Oral Roberts, throwing five innings and giving up four hits and one unearned run.

Four Golden Eagles registered two hits each on the game.

ORU and Baylor will meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
