OSU Softball Sweeps Two Games in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – After easily cruising through its first game of the day Saturday, the Oklahoma State softball team had to fight through extra innings in its second before winning with a walk-off single in the 10th.

The Cowgirls (7-2) led for much of the second game against Nicholls State, but the Colonels scored a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game 5-5 and force extra innings.

Both teams were held scoreless in the eighth and ninth, but Nicholls State took its first lead since the first inning with an RBI groundout by Kat Angeles.

The Cowgirls had two quick groundouts in the bottom of the inning to bring them one out away from a loss. But Sammy Diffendaffer entered as a pinch hitter with a runner on third and drove her home to tie the game.

Two batters later, Diffendaffer scored the game-winning runner on a single up the middle by Kelsey Anchors. Kat Espinosa earned a win after pitching all 10 innings, giving up six hits and striking out 12.

The Cowgirls had a much easier time in the first game of the day, a 13-3 blowout of Southern. The game ended after six innings, and OSU scored in all but one of those innings.

The scoring started in the first on an RBI double by Ari Morrison followed by an RBI single by Julie Ward to take a quick 2-0 lead. The Cowgirls added two more runs in each of the third and fourth innings before blowing the game open in the fifth.

With OSU already leading 6-1, the Cowgirls got RBIs from four consecutive batters – Morrison, Ward, Mariah Gearhart and Alysia Hamilton – to take a commanding nine-run lead.

Southern scored two runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to two-run homer by Shawntall Steamer, but OSU countered with three more runs in the sixth to finish the scoring.

The Cowgirls’ blowout in the first game was already their third win by eight or more runs this season, and their second game marked the second time they have gone to 10 innings. They won both times.
