TULSA, Oklahoma – Last Saturday, the Tulsa football team held their first scrimmage of the spring. The weather was cold and rainy and the defense took advantage of those conditions and dominated the day.

This Saturday, the weather at Chapman Stadiumwas sunny and warm. And thanks to the nice conditions, both the offense and defense had a chance to show off their skills.

During the early part of the scrimmage, back-up quarterbacks Kalen Hendersonand Shavodrick Beavertook all the snaps. And the defense was ready for them, holding both quarterbacks in check.

Then, GJ Kinnetook over the offense and that seemed to get everyone going. Kinne had a very solid day under center, throwing for 3 touchdowns, including 2 to Damaris Johnsonand 1 to Jordan James. The offense also got some production out of their backfield. Trey Wattswas the leading rusher, gaining 88 yards on just 13 carries.

As a team, the TU offense ran for 184 yards and threw for 251 yards.

While those numbers are nice, they also represent a victory for the defense. Those 184 rushing yards came on 50 carries, an average of 3.68 yards per carry. The defense also held the quarterbacks to just 19-of-47 passing and they did return one interception for a touchdown.

All in all, head coach Bill Blankenshipwas pretty happy with the day, saying “Today was one of those days where we got a lot of good things on both sides of the ball to look at and I’m sure when I go check out the film I’m going to find plenty to correct on both sides, but I felt good about the whole day.”

TU still has 5 more practices this spring. Then, they’ll wrap up spring ball with their Spring Game on pril 15th.
