OSU Baseball Capitalizes on Mistakes in Blowout

LINCOLN, Neb. – After the game started as a pitchers’ duel, the Oklahoma State baseball team took advantage of several mistakes in the middle innings on the way to a 10-0 blowout of Nebraska Saturday.

Starting pitchers Brad Propst and Jon Keller matched each other pitch for pitch as the game began, and both carried one-hitters into the fifth inning. But in the fifth Nebraska’s defense fell apart, and the Cowboys took over from there.

After starting the fifth inning with an out, two of the next three OSU batters reached base thanks to Nebraska errors. The inning should have been over, but instead those mistakes led to a slew of Cowboy runs.

Devin Shines scored the game’s first run thanks to the second error of the inning, and in the next at-bat Jared Womack singled to load the bases. Davis Duren took advantage with a two-run single, and Mark Ginther followed with a two-run double to give the Cowboys five unearned runs in the inning and force Nebraska to pull Keller.

Tyler King took over and pitched into the sixth, when he walked the first two batters of the inning. He then committed a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt that scored both of the runners on base, giving OSU a 7-0 lead.

After a strikeout and walk, Duren drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Ginther added another with a single. At that point, the Cowboys led 9-0 and all of their runs were unearned. Duren recorded his fourth RBI of the game in the eighth to finish the scoring and record the only earned run of the day.

Propst pitched seven full innings and held Nebraska scoreless on only three hits and struck out five. Keller was credited with a loss despite the fact that he did not give up any earned runs and only allowed four hits.

The Cowboys now have won five games in a row and will complete their three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
