NORMAN, Oklahoma -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but were only able to reach first a handful of times in the remainder of the game, falling to the Oklahoma Sooners, 8-3.

OSU’s Mark Ginther hit a leadoff homer in the top of the third, giving the Cowboys a quick start. Gabe Weidernaar hit a single, but the Sooners were able to turn a double-play on the next at-bat, clearing the bases. Hunter Bailey doubled to left center and notched the second run of the inning when teammate Devin Shines hit a single up the middle for the 2-0 lead. The Pokes put up one more run in the top of the third, which proved to be their last score of the game.

The Sooners didn’t take long to respond, edging back in the game in the bottom of the third. OU warmed their sticks up quickly. Chris Ellison was walked and advanced to third on the next at-bat when Tyler Ogle hit a double to left center. Garrett Buechelle sent home both base runners – Ellison on third and Ogle on second – with a single up the middle to narrow the score 3-2 in favor of the Pokes.

Cameron Seitzer hit a pop fly to centerfield for the second out, but Max White kept things alive by hitting a single, sending Buechele to the second. Cody Reine was struck by a pitch to load the bases and OSU’s Andrew Heck was relieved by Andrew Heaney on the mound. Heaney’s luck wasn’t much better, as he walked Casey Johnson and allowed the Sooners to tie the game, 3-3.

Oklahoma continued to pull ahead, notching two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth, including a solo home run by Reine in the bottom of the fifth.

The Cowboys changed pitchers twice late in the game, once in the bottom of the sixth and once in the bottom of the eighth in their attempt to hold off the Sooners. While their pitching may have held Oklahoma at bay, the Sooners’ lead was too much for the Cowboys to overcome.

Ryan Duke closed the game, pitching the final inning.Freshman DillonOverton earned the winhaving pitched 6.1 innings. The left-handerimproves to 5-2 on the season after allowing four hits in 23 batters and struck out eight Cowboys.
