Oklahoma Drops Texas to Avoid Series Sweep

The Sooners lost the series, but salvaged it a bit with a three-run win over their rival from the south.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Despite losing the 13th-consecutive season series against the Texas Longhorns, the Sooners avoided the series sweep Sunday with a 5-2 win.

For the majority of the game Oklahoma (31-13, 10-9) kept the Texas (33-11, 15-6) offense in check. The Sooners’ staff gave up just two runs in the contest, a solo home run by Tant Shepherd in the fourth and an RBI single in the ninth. Dillon Overton (7-3) received a win for the outing, giving allowing just two hits in 4.2 innings of service.

Texas starter Sam Stafford (5-2) was credited with a loss Sunday, giving up four hits and one earned run in a 3.2 inning outing.

The Sooners struck first in the top of the third. With two outs and Cale Ellis on third, Tyler Ogle doubled to right field to bring Ellis home and take a 1-0 advantage. Garrett Buechele reached on a error at short stop in the next at-bat, allowing Ogle to score and extend the lead to two runs.

Oklahoma expanded its lead in the top of the sixth with a one-out triple from Eric Ross to score Evan Mistich and Cameron Seitzer. Max White capped off the scoring in the next inning with a solo home run to take a 5-1 lead.

OU will be back in action Wednesday for a non-conference matchup against Arkansas – Little Rock on the road, before returning home Friday for a weekend series against the Kansas Jayhawks.
