NORMAN, Oklahoma -- The Oklahoma Sooners racked up 16 runs while holding New Mexico to 6, sweeping a doubleheader against the Lobos, both contests ending 8-3. Despite the high scores, most of the credit for the wins may fall on the Oklahoma starters.

In the opening game, Burch Smith (9-3) pitched six innings for Oklahoma (37-13), giving up just seven hits and two earned runs. Additionally, he struck out six of the 27 New Mexico (16-35) batters he faced in the start.

Jake McCasland (2-6) was credited with a loss for the outing, giving up five earned runs on six hits in his 1.2 innings of service.

The Sooners front-loaded all of their runs in the opening game, scoring all eight in the opening inning. Cameron Seitzer set the pace for the Oklahoma in the opening game, with RBI singles in the first and second innings.

The second game was decided by the left arm of OU freshman Jordan John (4-0), who gave up two earned runs on nine hits, while striking out eight in his seven innings of service. Sam Wilson (2-3) lasted just two-thirds of an inning for New Mexico, giving up three hits and three earned runs to the eight he faced.

Garrett Buechelle was just 1-of-4 for the night, but his one hit was a two-run double in the bottom of the first to give the Sooners a three-run advantage.

The three-game series will continue at 1 p.m. Sunday, the Sooners’ final non-conference game of the regular season.
