I think that Dana Holgorsen will do a good job at West Virginia. You just never know how things are going to work out when a guy finally takes charge of his own program. But now the questions really begin.

First of all, OSU fans want to know who will take Holgorsen’s spot. OSU Athletic Director Mike Holder said Tuesday he trusts Gundy to hire whoever he wanted. And it’s impossible to argue with that.

I still don’t think Gundy has gotten enough credit for the coaches he’s hired. A coach or two seem to get plucked from his staff every year. And look at the coordinators who he has hired who have left to take head coaching jobs: Tim Beckman to Toledo, Larry Fedora to Southern Miss and Holgorsen to West Virginia all in the last three years. Gundy also lost assistants Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper to Auburn and those guys are on the verge of winning a national title.

First you have to worry about Holgorsen taking someone else with him. Joe DeForest is probably most likely to go and that would be a huge loss. DeForest did not get the head coaching job at his alma mater Louisiana-Lafayette and is pretty tight with Holgorsen according to reports. DeForest has been at OSU for 10 years and is a highly-respected recruiter in addition to his coach abilities. He may want a change in scenery that involves a promotion.

Who are the most likely replacements for Holgorsen? Start with those on staff. Wide Receivers coach Doug Meacham has been a coordinator before and has learned from Fedora and Holgorsen. He was OSU’s passing game coordinator in 2008 and 2009.

Gunter Brewer was co-offensive coordinator for the Cowboys before Holgorsen’s hire.

But now, let’s take a look outside. As a journalist covering OSU football, it’s my dream that Mike Leach get the job. Never a dull press conference and always a quote worth using. That’s what we in the television world are looking for.

Gundy has always expressed his admiration for the dethroned pirate king who was swept out of Lubbock. Let’s not be so fast, though. It would likely be a one-year situation again with Leach looking for a head coaching job. Do the Cowboys want another one-hit wonder? Or perhaps Leach comes in and Meacham and others learn from him with an eye toward becoming offensive coordinator in 2012.

I don’t think Gundy would have a problem with having a powerful personality such as Leach’s around. But could Leach exist in a system where wasn’t in charge?

Others to think about are Houston co-offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. He played for Leach and Holgorsen at Texas Tech and tutored under the latter at Houston. East Carolina offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley is only 27, but he’s a Leach protg and his offense ranked 22nd in the country this season.
The Holgorsen question has been answered. Now the fun begins. Especially if Leach rolls into Stillwater.
