USS Oklahoma Veterans Visit The Ship's Mast In Muskogee

MUSKOGEE, Oklahoma -- Several of the survivors of the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor visited Muskogee Friday. The veterans, who served on the USS Oklahoma, held a reunion in Muskogee at the community's War Memorial Park.

The USS Oklahoma was part of the fleet of American ships attacked at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. She capsized 12 minutes after being struck by Japanese torpedoes, taking 429 lives with her, many trapped inside the submerged vessel.

"This is a rare opportunity to meet some of the men who were at Pearl Harbor the day the United States was pulled into World War II," said state Rep. George Faught, R-Muskogee.

"It is an honor to host these brave veterans and a chance to thank them for their service. All members of the public are welcome to attend and participate."

The reunion took place at War Memorial Park in Muskogee, where a section of the mast of the USS Oklahoma is on display.
