A Hot Weekend

Posted: Updated:

The excessive heat warnings will remain through tonight for portions of northern OK while southeastern sections of the area will be placed into heat advisories.  Local dew point temperatures are expected to slowly drop a few degrees this afternoon and also tomorrow leading to lower morning lows and slightly lower afternoon heat index values by this weekend.  The temperatures will still be on the hot side with highs in the 100 to 105 category Saturday.

Late yesterday afternoon a few isolated storms formed as expected in southwestern and western Arkansas.  This migrated westward and produced an outflow boundary that helped to produce a few more storms across the fast eastern sections of the state.  This may occur again today but the coverage will be low.

The weekend still offers just enough of an upper air change to bring a weak disturbance near the area Saturday evening into Sunday.  A weak boundary may slide into southern Kansas but this morning's data keeps the boundary a little too far north to give us a big chance of showers or storms.  I'll continue to mention this slight probability for the weekend across northern OK but the chance will remain less than 20% for this forecast cycle.

The extended data continues to slide the mid level ridge westward by soon and this may allow for a few more isolated storms across eastern OK early next week but I don't think this will take the edge off the heat.  Afternoon highs will remain either in the upper 90s or near 100.  I have opted to keep the 100 on the map at this juncture.

The EURO data supports the possibility of a weak boundary nearing the area Thursday before the mid level ridge expands over the region next weekend.

Keep yourself hydrated and take those breaks while working outside this weekend.
