BERRYHILL, Oklahoma -- A Sand Springs teenager was critically injured in a single-car wreck in west Tulsa County on Sunday, July 24.

Micah Shae Gunter was hospitalized with head injuries after losing control of her car and crashing into a tree at about 3:25 a.m., according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The 17-year-old Gunter was westbound on 34th Street near 68th West Avenue in a 2001 Chevy Malibu when the wreck occurred.

"They essentially came over the hill too fast, and when they did they got a little airborne," said OHP Trooper Matthew Hughart.

"The car bottomed out which caused them to pop the front driver's side tire. They lost control, and they went in and subsequently hit a tree, off into the ditch," he said.

A 15-year-old male passenger was treated and released for minor injuries.

The wreck was blamed on exceeding the speed limit. Gunter's condition at the time of the wreck was apparently normal, according to the OHP collision report.

She was not wearing a seat belt. The passenger was belted in.
