Madill RB/LB Darryl Fields grew up an Oklahoma Sooners fan. Now one of the top high school players in the state is moving up on OU’s board, however, the Sooners have yet to offer the senior a scholarship. While Oklahoma might be the team of his youth, there is a good chance it might not be the team his future.

“I remember all I used to say is I want to grow up and go to OU,” Fields said. “Now that I see their program; I’m not thinking that I can’t play; but they seem pretty set; they’re always a pretty good team.”

Oklahoma State and Tulsa are two of the Wildcats star’s 11 scholarship offers. According to Fields, his top five schools are; SMU, Kansas, North Texas, the Cowboys and Colorado State. The senior also stated Colorado, Kansas State, Rice, Arkansas, and Texas Tech have offered full rides as well.

Fields can play on both sides of the field. He said he does not care if he is making tackles or breaking them, but would prefer to line-up in the backfield.

“I probably like playing running back better,” Fields said. “If I go to a school, and they got running backs, then I’ll play linebacker.”

However it’s been a rough go for fields over the last couple days. His cousin passed away Tuesday morning from a long suffering ailment. Fields step-grandfather died Monday. Those two events are weighing heavily both on and off the field.

“I was kind of wanting to get away, but it just hit me, if something happens what am I going to do? It made me look at [my college choice] in a different way,” Fields said. “I’m not over it. It’ll be in the back of my mind all the time.”

Although none of the schools on his list are too far away from home, Fields would not mind a little travel if the right offer came along. When he does make a decision, his school will have met a few criteria.

“I was looking for a team that’s trying to rebuild and turn their program around,” Fields said. “Also, I was looking where I would be comfortable with the people around me, and with the coaches.”

Fields says he probably will not make a decision until after the season. Teammate Kevin Roberts is also drawing Division 1 interest.
